Mornings With Me: 9/17/24

We arrived home yesterday evening in the midst of what is being called 'disturbance #8.'   We battled hard rain and gusts of wind for over 2 hours trying to get home.  This 'disturbance' was a complete surprise to everyone and especially to us as we had been out of town over the weekend.  We were both tired mentally and physically so after taking care of what had to be done, we took ourselves off to bed.

This morning, after breakfast and my morning Bible audio 'listening' time and prayer journaling, I set to work ...

I started a new jar of kefir milk and set it out to do its thing over the next 24 hours ...  (I generally have a kefir smoothie every morning as part of my breakfast, and it starts with kefir milk made right here in my kitchen.)

Headed to the chicken coup to care for the chickens and gather eggs ... (This is the sum total of this weekend's egg gathering.)  I washed them up, put them in cartons and refrigerated them.

While outside I saw that several pears were laying on the ground from the wind we had yesterday, so I picked through them and brought in the good ones.

I decided that the best way to preserve them, because of the amount, was to peel, slice and dehydrate.  Yes, I could have made pear preserves, but honestly, we don't eat that many jams and jellies, so dehydrating them was a better choice for us.

Before I could load the dehydrator with pears though, I had to empty it of all these dried apple slices!  As soon as they have cooled completely, I'll put the lid on the jar and add it to my pantry.  My plan for the apples is to chop them up into small pieces and add to granola.

Before I came back inside from doing my outside morning chores, I checked on the one lone pumpkin that I told you about in the last entry. Look how much it has changed!  It's ripening and I am thrilled!  I was afraid 'disturbance #8' might have wreaked havoc on it, but it didn't!  You can bet I will be watching it closely over the next several days and as soon as it's ripe, I'll be harvesting it.

Lastly, I turned these essential oil bottles upside down into a tub of Epsom salts some time ago to draw out the last bits of any essential oils that might be in them.  They've been sitting on my kitchen counter with a lid on the container and I've been moving it from place to place for far too long.  This morning, I got tired of moving the container, removed the now completely dry of any bits of essential oil bottles, and tossed them.  I mixed up the salts really well and put it in a pint jar to be used later in making foot soaks.  Essential oils are far too expensive to let even one tiny droplet go to waste.

I hope you've enjoyed reading this new feature, 'Mornings with Me!'

  1. Disturbance No 8 sounds rather like a sci-fi film! I'm glad you got through it ok. I love the essential oil/epsom salt idea. When my bottles are down to the dregs I usually put them in drawers holding clothes to make them smell nice and (hopefully) deter moths, but your idea sounds really quite pampering and luxurious.

    1. Tracy, I like your idea of putting 'empty' essential oil bottles in drawers holding clothes too! I can do both!

Disturbance #8 was sneaky and brutal!

  2. We run oil bottles through the dishwasher when we are sure they are empty because we often share oils with others and I do custom blends for us. It saves me a little bit of money over buying new bottles.
