From My Home to Yours
~ Fall Things ... ~
Even though the fall season doesn't officially kick off until September 21st, around the first of September I slide into what I call my 'fall mode.' I start bringing out the fall decor and swapping it out with summer things. Fall colored quilts replace the summer ones, fall themed mug rugs come out as does pillows, throws and such. Let's not forget about the 'mums,' it's time to start searching for those as well. I think the fall season is my favorite season of the year ... probably because our summers are so brutal with heat and humidity.
I am definitely ready for cooler days and nights, a slower pace, snuggly blankets and hot teas. But alas, our temps are still in the 90's, upper 90's to be exact. Several days this week we hit 98 degrees and above with index temps above 100! Come on cooler temps, I'm ready for you!
In and around all this longing for fall like temps, like goes on and we are busy as bees 'putting up the harvest' and getting ready for winter.
Our greenhouse needs new covering so we're working hard on giving it a makeover. We have the old cover removed and are in the process of re-securing the ribs, making repairs where needed and tightening everything up before putting the new cover on. We've been playing the 'beat the heat' game in working on this project. We're out there early, early in the morning before the day heats up, once the sun starts doing it's thing, we head inside. It will take us longer to complete the project doing it this way, but it saves us lots of money being able to do it ourselves.
I had some really overripe bananas to do something with this week, so I made banana bread. It is delicious and the perfect quick grab snack after spending the morning working outside on the greenhouse.
We've been enjoying fresh from the vine cucumbers for the last couple of weeks, we had so many the first part of this week, I decided to make a jar of refrigerator pickles. This jar will last us through the end of the year. We plan to do another planting and with a bit of luck should have another round of fresh cucumbers to enjoy later this year.
We were two 5-gallon buckets of canning pears this week, all we had to do was go harvest them. We were delighted! I'll be working on getting them canned up over the next few days.
We were also given about a peck of okra. I dehydrated most of it leaving enough out for us to enjoy as a side in a couple of meals. This is the first batch that came out of the dehydrator, in the end I had 3 quart jars. Here are a few more of my 'okra' posts ...
One more thing about okra and then we'll move on ... I've read from several sources that okra is a good addition for smoothies. Hmmm, I don't want slimy smoothies (okra equals slime in my mind unless it is cooked properly), so I am going to give it a try by powdering some of the okra I dehydrated and add it that way.
Until the next time ...

We've been hovering at or above 100 here in southern Missouri. Not my favorite. I'm popping in on a few blogs, then I'm going back to my sewing machine.
ReplyDeleteHappy Labor Day! Come on Fall!
Laura
Laura, this brutal heat seems to be widespread this summer. I think a lot of people will welcome the fall temps! What are you sewing?
DeleteI think our heat has broken but not without some bad storms and hail. Banana bread is something that just may work with fructose for our sugar free diet. I will have to think about that.
ReplyDeleteWe had a productive week. The new grocery store had boneless skinless chicken breasts for $1.49 a pound. Hubby got the limit of two packages which was about ten pounds. I cut the first package into cubes and froze it in 8 oz. packages. Then the other one got cubed and into pint jars and into the canner. We had not canned anything for at least 18 months so this was a real accomplishment for me. We also made extra and put a few meals into the freezer for later.
Lana, that is a really good price for chicken breasts! I'm so glad you were up to doing some canning. It sounds like you were really wise in how you preserved the chicken breasts. You go girl!
DeleteThe comment about the banana bread with fructose was me.
ReplyDeleteLana can y'all use Monkfruit powder? Sam has me experimenting with it and it's 1:1 measure for sugar without a bitter aftertaste. I used it in my last batch of banana bread and it was quite good.
DeleteThanks for the recommendation. We will give that a try.
DeleteThanks! I just ordered some to try.
DeleteHere in TX, we are struggling with no rain in 50+ days and temps of 100-109. Our garden was good earlier but now, even the okra isn’t producing. Have you ever roasted okra? It is delicious!
ReplyDeleteI have not been outside much. Our neighborhood is like a ghost town.
I have been busy inside making meatballs and meatloaf for the freezer. Hubby got outside early and grilled burgers and chicken for freezer. Having these things on hand prevents excuses to grab a meal out.
We will harvest our sweet potatoes soon and have no idea what to expect after this unusual weather.
Heavenly Father, please bring rain and a cool down.
Kim
Again my won Sam (he's a food loving cook like his mama) has recommended roasted okra to me as well and he tells me it's the best thing. From a boy who only ever ate it fried, I reckon that's a good recommendation.
DeleteKim, when it gets too hot for okra to produce, you know it is hot! I have not tried roasted okra, but you have me curious now and I will definitely try it.
DeleteI'm with you on having prepared food on hand for the same reason you gave. It just makes sense, doesn't it!
Praying for cooler weather and some rain for you!
I'm in the mood to cook, but the hot weather has not tempted me too much in that direction. However, like you Patsi, as soon as it's September my mind will jump to autumn and so I decorated my house last week (and cleaned it really well too). I'm very pleased with my home at the moment. I even rearranged furniture in the living and dining spaces, which is not something I do!
ReplyDeleteI made Chicken and Dumplings the way my Granny did with the flat noodle shaped dumplings. John always preferred the fat biscuity type dumplings and I tended to make it that way for him. He also loathed okra and wouldn't even eat it fried. However, one thing I am rediscovering now that I am a widow is that I can eat things like carrots in my stew and soup and okra in my soups. I even used to enjoy okra and tomatoes as a side dish. Haven't had that in 40 years!
Terri, I've started the fall decorating, but not the fall deep cleaning! I'm glad you are finding a bit of joy in your new season of life ... it's the little things, isn't it! We fall on the flat dumpling side of chicken and dumplings too! Chicken and dumplings is a winter staple for us and one of the reasons I can chicken!
DeletePatsi....I'm with you regarding the cooler weather. I've always loved fall 🍁. I made banana bread recently too and we shared with our neighbors. Now I'm ready for the pumpkin bread. Sounds like you've been very busy with the greenhouse but you will get a great return. Tillie
ReplyDeleteTillie, the heat has been brutal, hasn't it! I won't be sorry to see it go! It is almost pumpkin bread time, isn't it! I love the different foods different seasons bring!
DeleteYes, the greenhouse is keeping us busy for sure. About every 4 years we have to give it a 'makeover' and this is the year!!
